Homeowner called with a leak over the garage suspecting he required roof repairs. Upon investigation our technician discovered that the architecture of the home required more attention than had previously been paid to this area. The area in question was a side wall that ran into the roof and created what we call a "dead valley." This means that the water all runs down to the end of this "dead valley" creating water to pond and back up.
Our technician investigated further and discovered that the shingles in this area were incorrectly installed. The shingles were butting right up to the siding causing the water to wick up where it was pooling. This over time had eroded and rotted the siding. In turn this created a hole and allowed water to penetrate behind the existing flashing.
Our technician removed the shingles and installed flashing further up the wall that would create a water flow instead of a trough. This will cause the water to not only flow off of the roof, but will not allow that water to pond and rot away the siding.
